Beach park gatehouses go cashless October 1
Plus a museum talk Wednesday, the city's 2030 sustainability draft, and a September 30 deadline for business owners.
Welcome back from the long weekend. Labor Day is behind us, though its trash schedule lingers a day longer, and Glades Road has an inspection report that will get people talking.
Starting October 1, the gatehouses at Boca Raton's beach parks will stop taking cash for parking. Credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay will all work at the gatehouse. The city says fewer than 17 percent of gatehouse transactions are paid in cash now, with most visitors already paying electronically.
The city's reasons are quicker transactions, less cash handling at the gatehouses and better payment security and accountability. If you hold a valid beach parking permit, nothing changes, and you can drive in as usual. Signs go up at beach park entrances before the switch, and gatehouse attendants will remind visitors who still pay cash.
J. Alexander's picked up 11 health violations in two days
J. Alexander's at 1400 Glades Road logged 11 violations across two Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation inspections at the end of August. Ten came at the first visit and one more at a re-inspection the next day. The restaurant was not ordered to close.
The high-priority findings included an employee who handled raw chicken and steak, then flipped cooked chicken and touched seasoning without washing hands. Shell eggs were at 68 degrees. Sour cream, chicken, beef patties and beef skewers were cold-held above the 41-degree limit, and inspectors issued a stop-sale. At the follow-up, an employee again went from raw beef to cooked chicken without a handwash, which drew an administrative complaint.
Boca business tax certificates expire September 30
If you run a business in Boca Raton, your 2026 business tax certificate expires September 30. The city's renewal window for 2027 has been open since July 1. Renewals filed late pick up penalties and late fees. The city routes renewals through Boca eHub, its online platform, and keeps an eHub instructions page for anyone unsure of the steps.
The process runs four steps. Check your mailbox and email for the city's reminder. Use the link in it to log in to Boca eHub and renew. Review your invoice or invoices and pay online. Then print your Business Tax Receipt and Certificate of Use, which become available 24 hours after payment.

The Boca Raton Museum of Art holds the first of two September Art in Focus talks on Wednesday, September 9. This one puts two works in conversation: Hans Hofmann's Light Yellow Landscape and Elaine de Kooning's Orange Grotto Cave #17. The second, on September 23, is a slow-looking tour that traces the Beat literary connections in the work of the artist Jess.
Five exhibitions are on view this month, and a docent leads a tour at 2 p.m. every day the museum is open. September also brings an evening with artist TYPOE GRAN, family studios, yoga among the art and a celebration of Hispanic heritage. Contact the event organizer for tickets and details.
Tuesday trash routes run Wednesday this week
Labor Day fell on Monday, and the holiday shift in sanitation pickup runs through Wednesday. With no service Monday, Monday routes moved to Tuesday and Tuesday routes move to Wednesday, September 9. If your regular pickup is Tuesday, hold the bins until Wednesday this week.
The city's Sanitation Collection Map shows which day covers your street. Want a reminder? Sign up for sanitation notifications on the city website, or text SanitationAlert, with no space, to 38276. The reminder arrives by text on Sunday. The Recycle Coach app covers what to recycle and when.
The city wants your take on its 2030 sustainability plan by October 9
Boca Raton's Office of Sustainability has drafted an update to the city's Sustainability Action Plan, with 2030 as the new target year. The draft builds on the original 2019 plan and sets measurable goals and proposed actions across nine focus areas.
Residents, businesses and community organizations have until October 9 to weigh in through the Community Input tab on the plan's city webpage. You can attach your name and contact information or comment anonymously. The city has posted the draft plan, a webinar on the update and the slides from an August presentation.
Once the comment window closes, the final plan goes to City Council for adoption. Sustainability Manager Tina Batoh-Jennings is the contact, at sustainability@myboca.us.
